Vocab Lists

With Bible Vocab, you have the freedom to select vocabulary lists from various sections of the Bible and from renowned Greek and Hebrew textbooks. The available textbooks include:

  • Fuller & Choi, Invitation to Biblical Hebrew
  • Garrett & DeRouchie, A Modern Grammar for Biblical Hebrew
  • Hackett, A Basic Introduction to Biblical Hebrew
  • Pratico & Van Pelt. Basics of Biblical Hebrew (eds. 2 & 3)
  • Ross, Introducing Biblical Hebrew, Baker Academic
  • Seow, A Grammar for Biblical Hebrew
  • Baugh, A New Testament Greek Primer
  • Decker, Reading Koine Greek, Baker Academic
  • Duff, The Elements of New Testament Greek
  • Kostenberger, Merkle, & Plummer. Going Deeper with New Testament Greek
  • Merkle & Plummer, Beginning with New Testament Greek
  • Mounce, Basics of Biblical Greek
  • Rollinson, Online Greek Textbook

Please note that the vocabulary items may occasionally differ in form from those found in the textbooks.

Spaced Repetition

One of the app's highlights is its effective spaced repetition feature. This feature allows you to test and reinforce your knowledge of vocabulary at defined intervals, progressively increasing their frequency when correctly answered. Simply tap on the spaced repetition button (located in the top right corner), and the app will guide you through the words you need to study next.

Reading Mode

Utilize the power of spaced repetition to improve your ability to read whole verses in the Bible. Once you have acquired enough vocabulary through Spaced Repetition mode, Reading Mode will introduce entire verses to you. Initially, the verses will be displayed with parsing, dictionary forms, and glosses. As your familiarity with each verse deepens, you will be challenged to read them in the original language. The intervals at which these verses appear will progressively lengthen as your proficiency increases.

Slideshow Modes

Bible Vocab offers three slideshow modes:

  1. Vocab Mode: This mode presents words in their dictionary form.
  2. Parsing Mode: Here, you encounter words as they appear in the text and are assessed on their grammatical form.
  3. Verses Mode: This mode enables you to view entire verses, complete with parsing, dictionary forms, and glosses.

Greek Audio

Dr. George Athas from Moore College in Sydney has meticulously recorded audio for all the words in the Greek New Testament. The audio is presented using a restored Koine pronunciation system. A free trial is available for the 100 most frequently used words. If you find it helpful, you may choose to purchase additional audio downloads.

Data Sources

You have the option to select from four Greek Testament texts: SBL, Westcott-Hort, Tischendorf, and Byzantine. The OT text is based on the Westminster Leningrad Codex, provided by Open Scriptures. The Greek lexicons used are:

  • Dodson (2010) - greeklexicon.org
  • Mounce Concise Greek-English Lexicon (© 1993. William Mounce. All Rights Reserved - billmounce.com/greek-dictionary)

The Hebrew/Aramaic lexicon primarily relies on the Brown-Driver-Briggs lexicon, provided by Open Scriptures. Additionally, you can utilize the glosses from the textbooks mentioned above for further clarity and comprehension.
